Hana Towobola is a lexicographer, former chemist and luxury fashion designer. After a decade designing and selling bespoke collections through UK retailers, she moved into made-to-order fashion in response to her concerns about the industry's environmental and social impact— before returning to study at FIDM in California, where a Fairchild fashion dictionary in a sewing class became the unexpected starting point for what would become the Sustainable Fashion Vocabulary. She subsequently invented a sustainable bio-material — endorsed by Dana Thomas, author of Fashionopolis
Over three and a half years, Towobola developed a structured research methodology mapping the full landscape of sustainable fashion terminology against the UN Planetary Boundaries, the 17 UN SDGs, and the fashion industry's documented problem areas — building the scoring rubric she calls the Sustainability Stack. The result is the first encyclopaedia to treat sustainability in fashion as four simultaneous languages: science, socio-economics, policy, and industry — and to give practitioners the precise, verified vocabulary to speak all four.
She has built a contributor network spanning UAL, Cranfield University, FIT, Parsons, Birmingham City University, Chulalongkorn University, the International Textiles and Apparel Association, and the Chanel Group.
